Cultural History Singapore had been a British colony for 150 years it was linked to the whole Malay peninsula. It came into being a British trade port in 1819 causing Malays from nearby areas, immigrants from china, and Indian laborers to move into the island. In 1959 Singapore gained their independence and joined the Union of Malaya in 1963, however they were expelled in 1965 and emerged as a nation. Until the early 1970 the island had severe housing shortages, poor infrastructure, etc. They were able to change into to a rich, orderly, and industrialized society. The remembrance of social and economic difficulties influenced the development of a national culture with a focus on wealth and stability. Today Singapore has cultural links to India, China, Malaysia, and Indonesia. They have no single dominant national identity and their cultural activities spring from one or another of the major civilizations of China, India, Indonesia or the west. |
